Prolonged Exposure
Prolonged exposure is a treatment for PTSD. It's a great fit for those who find themselves avoiding situations that remind them of the traumatic experiences. This could be not going to certain places, staying away from certain people or trying to avoid uncomfortable situations such as only going to the grocery store at midnight when it's less crowded.
During sessions you would be guided in ways to recount the events that you went through in helpful and healing ways. You would also spend some time outside of sessions slowly approaching the situations you’ve been avoiding. By going at a pace that works for you, your mind has the opportunity to learn that even though you weren’t safe back then, you are safe now and that you are capable of so much more than what the PTSD told you.
I’m not going to lie, going through these steps is hard work, but clients I’ve worked with using Prolonged Exposure have found profound relief and describe that they now control the memories of the past rather than being controlled by them, typically within 12-18 sessions.
